  Officer of the Month

Sara Hallett ’81
President
Polk County Auburn Club

Sara Hallett ’81 began attending the Club Leadership Conference before she even had a club. She attended to learn everything she could to give her the best chance of successfully reorganizing and re-chartering the Polk County Auburn Club in Winter Haven/Lakeland, Fla.

Sara, who serves as president of the newly chartered club, says her motivation was simple.

“I love Auburn,” she said. “It had been a while since our club was active and some of us would talk about how nice it would be to be able to get together with other Auburn people, whether it was for watch parties, community service or just fun activities, so I decided to act on those conversations.”

Sara organized a meeting to establish a slate of officers and a board and, from there, the new leadership took off.

“We worked hard—and fast—to achieve all the requirements necessary to become a chartered club again,” Sara said. “We stuffed backpacks with school supplies for our Auburn Alumni in Action project, had watch parties for almost every game last year (and what a year that was) and this year, we were able to have a Freshmen Send-off for our one student attending AU this fall.”

Sara is quick to point out that she did not work alone.

“It took the help of a lot of people, both here and in Auburn, but we did it,” she said. “Now, when we get together, it’s such a treat to see all the Auburn shirts, hats, magnets and more—all here in central Florida!

“It’s been so much fun reconnecting our Auburn family here in Polk County, even though we’re more than 400 miles away from the loveliest village,” Sara said. “Our club is growing and we look forward to involving even more alumni and friends as we continue to foster the Auburn spirit in central Florida.”

In addition to her work with the club, Sara spends her time volunteering at her son’s school. She is involved with the United Way of Central Florida, The Garden Club of Winter Haven, Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church, the Florida Public Relations Association and the Junior League of Greater Winter Haven.

  Membership

An Auburn Club is for all Auburn alumni and friends. The Auburn Alumni Association is dependent upon members making contributions to provide the necessary financial support to help carry on the services and programs required for an effective Auburn Club Program. According to Section 5 of the Policy for Auburn Clubs included in the by-laws of the Auburn Alumni Association, active membership in an Auburn Club shall be limited to the active members of the Auburn Alumni Association. All club officers must be active members of the National Alumni Association, but the by-laws of any club provide that worthy and loyal friends who are not alumni may become associate members of the local club. All clubs should promote this effort, since Auburn has tremendous non-alumni support from people across the state, region, and nation.
